Coral may look like a rock, but it is alive! It is made up of tiny animals called polyps. Many corals live together and, over time, build the hard structures that form a reef.
A home in the lagoon
Fish and other animals find shelter and food around the reef. Polyps also catch plankton with their tentacles. Discover more about plankton.
Matau and Poe’s gentle gesture
They admire the reef without touching or walking on the coral. Follow local guidance to help protect the lagoon and its inhabitants.
