A champion traveller
Humpback whales can travel very long distances between their feeding and breeding grounds. Every year, humpback whales visit the waters of French Polynesia to breed and give birth, particularly between July and October.

Tiny meals
In their feeding grounds, usually in colder waters, humpback whales eat small fish and krill, which is part of the plankton. They filter water through plates called baleen, which work a little like a sieve.
Watching from a distance
From the shore, Matau and Poe watch a mother and her calf. They stay quiet and let them continue their journey. If you see whales, always follow local rules and the guidance of the people who protect them.
