A head appears briefly on the lagoon’s surface. “A turtle!” whispers Poe. She and Matau stay quiet to watch.
A great traveller
Sea turtles swim with their flippers and come to the surface to breathe. The green turtle is one of the species found in French Polynesia. It sometimes shares the lagoon with the inhabitants of the coral reef.
A gentle encounter
In the water or on the beach, always give a turtle space. Do not touch, chase or feed it. If you see an injured turtle, tell an adult and contact the appropriate specialists.
A species to protect
Sea turtles are protected in French Polynesia. Teams from Te mana o te moana help study them and care for turtles in difficulty.
Poe’s challenge: draw a turtle in its lagoon and share an idea for watching animals without disturbing them.
